Novodevichy Monastery played an important role in the history of the Russian state. It was a place of exile and refuge for the persons of royal families. There was the residence of the Godunovs, and also in this place regent Sophia Alekseyevna, the sister of Peter the Great, as well as his first wife Evdokiya Lopukhina were forced to take the veil.
