You may reach the Hohensalzburg Fortress by either walking up the road along the walls or by the Festungsbahn - passenger funicular. It was built in 1892 and it is the oldest still operating funicular in Austria.
First Festungsbahn was water powered and in 1959 an electric motor was installed. The fountain and some mechanisms of water transmission can be seen near the lower railway platform. Length of the line is 198,5 meters (651 ft), altitude difference – 96,6 meters (317 ft).
