A large fortress located on the top of Festungsberg mountain is overlooking the city of Salzburg and can be clearly seen from anywhere in the city. Construction of the fortress started in 1077 gradually growing and became fortified better. By the XVI century the fortress became absolutely impregnable, that’s why the Hohensalzburg Castle was never captured.
Hohensalzburg Castle preserved in excellent condition. It is one of the symbols of Salzburg city and a sight which is highly recommended to visit.
Inside the Hohensalzburg Castle there are museums with various expositions narrating about the history of the city and the castle. During an excursion you can climb on the highest tower of the fortress from which whole Salzburg can be seen or on the contrary go down to the cellars formerly serving as a prison.
