The first stone fortifications at the place of the Pskov Kremlin, also known as the Pskov Krom, were built in the XIII century at the mouth of the Pskova and the Velikaya rivers. The tower at the very northern part of the wall is the Kutekroma tower dated to 1400.
Due to its location the Pskov fortress was one of the most important fortresses for the Russian state, that is why by the XVI century Pskov had become one of the most fortified Russian cities and the Pskov fortress had become one of the best Russian fortresses with the walls 6 metres thick and 20 metres high.
In 1500 defensive functions of the city were strengthened. That is why the entry into the Pskova river from the Velikaya river was blocked by the building of two towers – the Ploskaya tower and the Vysokaya (Voskresenskaya) tower from the two sides of the Pskova river. Between those towers a wall was raised right above the water with the bars lowered into the river.
