Gothic skyscraper was the highest in the world for 17 years

Woolworth Building's architect Cass Gilbert collected the traits of European gothic cathedrals in his project, that is why several years later Manhattan guidebooks began to call the skyscraper the "Temple of Commerce". Build in 1913, it held the world record of height until 1930.
