Legend about the name of the monastery
According to the legend Devichye Pole was the place where young girls were selected as a tribute to Mongol and Tatar khans. The convent is called Novodevichy (New maidens' monastery) as opposed to Stary devichy (Old maidens' - Zachatyevsky monastery) which was located closer to the Kremlin (in the district of present-day Prechistenka).
